Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll in an eligible graduate program.
  3. Must pursue studies in archaeology.
  4. Must be of Native American descent. For purposes of this award, this includes all Native peoples from anywhere in the Americas, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Indigenous Pacific Islanders.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to graduate students of Native American (all Native peoples anywhere in the Americas), Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Indigenous Pacific Islander ancestry. Students must be pursuing studies in archaeology.

Application requirements for the SAA Native American Graduate Archaeology Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Budget
  • Documentation of ancestry
  • Recommendation letters (2)
Additional Information: Students do not need to be formally accepted into the program or university at the time of application. However, scholarships will not be paid until the SAA is satisfied that the awardee has been formally accepted into a program or university. Normally, the SAA will arrange to pay tuition and other costs directly to the institution; the balance of the award will be sent to the awardee as a stipend. Students must be enrolled in a regionally accredited university in the United States, or if outside the United States, a university with equivalent accreditation. Applicants are critically evaluated to understand their interest in archaeology and their proposed program, their previous accomplishments, and the contributions the applicant hopes to make to the discipline's future. Scoring is based on the completeness of the application, the coherence and clarity of the personal statement, a reasonable and justified budget, and compelling letters of recommendation about the applicant's past successes and future potential. An individual may only be the recipient of one scholarship in each category: (1) the Native American Undergraduate Archaeology Scholarship, (2) the Native American Graduate Archaeology Scholarship, and (3) the Arthur C. Parker Scholarship/NSF Scholarships for Archaeological Training.

Award Amount: Up to $11,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship may be used for tuition, travel, food, housing, books, supplies, equipment, and child care.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,000.
