Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately eight awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international students.
  2. Must be a female.
  3. Must have a record of service to women and/or children in her country.
  4. Must reside in the United States at the time she submits the application.
  5. Must be a national of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank. The applicant cannot be a U.S. Green Card holder or Canadian immigrant.
  6. Must be 25 years of age or older by Dec. 31.
  7. Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to women who are citizens of developing nations but are currently residing in and enrolled in a college or university in the United States or Canada. The applicant must be 25 years of age or older and plan to return to a developing country two years after receiving the grant.

Additional Information: The purpose of the Margaret McNamara Education Grants is to support the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in a developing country. The applicant must demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a national of a developing country currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank. The applicant should refer to the 'country eligibility' Word document on the website provided to verify eligibility. Previous grant recipients studied agriculture, architecture, education, nursing, nutrition, pediatrics, public administration, public health, social sciences and social work. The foundation expects the grant recipient to return to her home country or another developing country within approximately two years after receiving her grant. She must then perform two or more years of service in the country. If the recipient does not return to her country or another developing country within 30 months of receiving the grant or after completing her studies in the United States, or does not complete the two years of service within 54 months of receiving the grant or after completing her studies in the United States, the recipient must pay back the full amount of her grant.

Award Amount: Approximately $15,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,000.

Information about this award can be found on the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund website by clicking on "grants" on the top navigation menu. In addition to completing the online application, the applicant must submit the following supporting documents: a personal statement; a current transcript and course registration; two recommendation letters, which must be completed on the MMMF form available online; an official estimate of expenses for foreign students, which is available from the foreign student advisor or financial aid office; one passport-size photograph; and a copy of her visa and I-20. The applicant must review the website for the appropriate personal statement and recommendation forms. All supporting materials must be mailed together in a sealed envelope. The application must be completed and all supporting documents must be received by midnight on the deadline date.
