Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In previous years, 37 scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Preference is given to students with a grade point average of 2.5 to 3.5.
  2. Must be planning to enroll in or currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program.
  3. Must be of Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian descent. The student or one parent must be enrolled and have documentation.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be enrolled in 6 to 18 credit hours.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Additional Information: The American Indian Education Foundation was established to support educational opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native students. Scholarships are awarded for each school year and are chosen by a national selection committee. Decisions are based on an overall assessment of the application. Awarded students only will be notified in early July. These students must provide a copy of their letter of admission to graduate school. Please note: Students attending online colleges are not eligible, nor are students who have completed all but their dissertation (ABD).

Award Amount: $1,000 to $2,000 annually, non-renewable. The level of scholarship funding is dependent on the number of hours enrolled in graduate studies. The scholarship can only be used for tuition and books. Recipients must provide a copy of semester grades to AIEF at the end of each semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available online at the American Indian Education Foundation (AIEF) website. To apply, the student must complete all sections of the application and include the following materials: an informative summary of at least 500 words (double-spaced, 12-point font) that discusses the topics listed on the application; an original 4 x 6 color photograph of himself/herself that is signed on the back; his/her most recent transcripts (unofficial accepted); GRE/LSAT test scores, if applicable; MA/MS grades if a Ph.D. applicant; and a copy of his/her tribal enrollment documents. Applications must be clipped together (no staples) and mailed as one packet in a large envelope to the address provided. Applications should not be folded and may not be faxed. Applications must be postmarked by the deadline date.
