Award amounts range from $200 to $10,000 annually, determined based on the student's demonstrated financial need, and renewable for up to three additional years. Every recipient also receives a one-time $3,000 stipend for a summer internship.
Generally, no more than 35 awards are given each year. The number of awards may vary each year.
Ralph J. Bunche was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a distinguished statesman and diplomat, and a champion of world peace. The first African American undersecretary of the United Nations, he received an honorary doctorate from Colby College in 1952 and later was a Colby parent. In 1979, Colby College established the Ralph J. Bunche Scholarship program to recognize students who demonstrate scholastic strength and leadership potential and who are African American, Latino/Latina, Asian American, or Native American.
