Number of Awards & Eligibility: 30 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a graduate student to apply for this award.
  4. Must attend college in Hawai'i.
  5. Must be of primarily Japanese ancestry.
  6. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  7. Must have been born in Hawai'i.
  8. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for college juniors, seniors and graduate students who were born in and attend college in Hawaii. Students must be primarily of Japanese ancestry, and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Toyo Sakumoto was born in Hilo in 1904 & attended Hilo High School. After marrying Eizo, she helped to run his photography shop in Honolulu. They had no children but loved "Youngster"?, and Eizo spent time as a baseball coach for a boys' team. The Sakumoto's established this trust to promote the importance of higher education. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the Hawai'i Community Foundation's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
