Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to seven awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international students.
  2. Must be a Japanese citizen.
  3. Must be studying macroeconomics at a university located outside of Japan.
  4. Must be entering the first, second, or third year of a Ph.D. program.
  5. Must plan to obtain his/her Ph.D. by age 34.
  6. Must have a record of high academic achievement.

Description: This scholarship is available for Japanese nationals who are pursuing a Ph.D. in macroeconomics at a university located outside Japan. Students should not be older than 27 at time of application, and should obtain their Ph.D. by 34.

Additional Information: Students must not accept other scholarships or earn other income while receiving support from the JISP. Those selected for the scholarship program will attend a short orientation at the IMF in Washington, D.C., where they will be introduced to the fund, its work, and its staff, including recent Ph.D. graduates. At the conclusion of their third or fourth year of graduate study, Japan-IMF Scholars return to Washington for a summer internship at the IMF, which lasts about 10 to 13 weeks. During this time, they work under the supervision of an experienced economist to carry out a research project and prepare a paper. Their paper may be presented to staff in the department at the end of their assignment, and papers of high standard may be published internally. The internship program is intended to make clear the exceptional opportunities, challenges, and rewards of a career at the IMF.

Award Amount: This award covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study, including one round-trip airfare, full university tuition and fees, medical insurance and related fees, a book allowance, and a monthly living allowance.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $120,000.

Applications are available online on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Institute website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a statement of 500 words or less primarily focusing on his/her interest in working as an IMF economist and his/her career goals; a complete transcript for his/her prior studies (the student must also submit a current transcript if he/she is currently enrolled in graduate studies); a original or photocopy of his/her GRE and TOEFL or IELTS scores; a copy of his/her university application for admission to a doctoral program; and two reference letters. The letters should come from individuals who can provide a candid assessment of the student's abilities; only professional or academic references are acceptable. The application and all supplemental materials should be emailed, faxed, or mailed to either the Institute of International Education (IIE) using the contact information provided or IIE's partner in Tokyo, International Education Blueprint (IEB).
