Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in the journalism or communications department of an accredited college or university in the United States, and intend to pursue a career in religious journalism. The term "religion journalism" includes news writing for secular and church media and for church institutions. The committee will consider appropriate news and journalism forms, including electronic and broadcast media, as well as print.
  3. Must be an active member of the United Methodist Church.
  4. Must consider oneself an ethnic minority.
  5. Must be a college junior or senior at time of application.

Description: This award is available for a United Methodist ethnic minority student enrolling in his/her junior or senior year in the journalism or communications department of an accredited college or university in the U.S. Applicants must plan to pursue a career in religious journalism.

Additional Information: The purpose of the scholarship is to enable the recipient to continue studies in communication and to promote a level of excellence in communication on the undergraduate level by ethnic minority students. The term "communication" is meant to cover such media as audiovisual, electronic, and print journalism. Applicants are judged on five criteria: Christian commitment and involvement in life of the United Methodist Church; academic achievement as revealed by his/her transcripts, grade point average and letters of reference; journalistic experience and/or evidence of journalistic talent; clarity of purpose in plans and goals for the future; and his/her potential professional ability as a religion communicator. The Leonard M. Perryman Scholarship Committee will meet around the first of April to review all completed applications and to make the selection for the award. Finalists may be called by the committee for a brief telephone interview. The winner will be notified by telephone soon after the selection has been made. All other applicants will receive written notice of the decision of the committee.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. The first half of the award will be paid when the recipient provides proof of enrollment in his/her undergraduate program in journalism/communications. For the spring term, the scholarship will be paid once proof of enrollment has been established.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the United Methodist Communications (UMCOM) website. The application must be typed or neatly printed and written in English. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: an official transcript, including evidence of his/her enrollment, sent directly by the school to UMCOM; three letters of recommendation, one each from his/her local church pastor or a denominational official, the chairperson of his/her undergraduate major department, and an employer or supervisor who is in a position to evaluate his/her communications skills (letters must include a telephone number); an essay of 500 words or less about his/her commitment to the Christian faith and his/her interest in communications, and how he/she sees the two intersecting in his/her life; three examples of his/her journalistic work (audiovisual, electronic, print); and a recent photograph of himself/herself, suitable for publicity use if he/she is awarded the scholarship. It is preferred that application materials be submitted electronically. Attachments should conform to the file types specified on the application, and must be clearly identified with the student's name and the name of the scholarship for which he/she is applying. If files are too large to email, a link to a web viewing location is acceptable. Electronic applications should be emailed to the address provided.
