In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be currently enrolled in medical school.
  2. Must plan to pursue a career in psychiatry and counseling.
  3. Must have a specific dedication to psychiatry and counseling for individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Additional Information: This program is intended to identify medical students who have primary interests in services related to HIV/AIDS and substance abuse and its relationship to the mental health or psychological well being of ethnic minorities.

Award Amount: Approximately $5,000 annually, non-renewable. The amount of funding may vary depending on the recipient's financial need.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications and information are available online at the American Psychiatric Association website. In addition to a completed application form, students must also submit the following items: a recommendation form from the dean of the applicant's medical program; a recent curriculum vitae; and a statement of interest explaining why he or she is pursuing a career related to HIV psychology and counseling. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date.
