Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered each year may vary according to the number of eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Tennessee.
  3. Must attend a public or private Tennessee college or university.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a minority.
  6. Must plan to enter the teaching field in a Tennessee public kindergarten, elementary or secondary school.
  7. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher (if applying as a high school senior) or 2.5 or higher (if applying as a continuing college student).
  8. Must have scored a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT (or its SAT equivalent) or graduate in the top 25 percent of his/her high school graduating class.
  9. Must enroll full time.
  10. Must be a high school senior or older.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for Tennessee resident, minority undergraduate students who are pursuing teaching field at a public or private Tennessee college or university. Students must plan to teach at a Tennessee public kindergarten, elementary or secondary school upon graduation.

Additional Information: The Tennessee General Assembly established the Minority Teaching Fellows Program in 1989 to attract talented minority Tennesseans to enter the teaching field. Awards are very competitive and based on funding. Renewal applicants are given first priority. Recipients must submit a signed 'Statement of Intent' to teach one year for each year the scholarship was awarded in a Tennessee public kindergarten, elementary or secondary school and, after graduation, annual statements of employment to TSAC. If recipients do not meet this obligation the award must be repaid to TSAC.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, renewable for three additional years providing the student maintains full-time enrollment with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available at high school guidance offices, financial aid offices, and online from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) College Pays website. In addition to a completed application, students must also submit the following materials: a 250 word essay on “Why I Chose Teaching as a Profession”; recommendations from a school official and from a person in the applicant’s community; a list of extracurricular activities; and an official high school transcript with official ACT/SAT scores for high school applicants or an official college transcript for continuing college students. Completed application and required materials must be received by TSAC by the deadline.
