In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must demonstrate academic achievement.
  4. Must be majoring in a field related to health care or tribal public policy.
  5. Must be Native American or an Alaskan Native.
  6. Must be a matriculated sophomore- or junior-level student at a two-year or four-year institution of higher education, pursuing a bachelor's or associate's degree during the upcoming academic year. "Sophomore" is defined, for purposes of this scholarship, as a student who intends at least two more years of full-time undergraduate study beginning in the fall; "junior" is defined, for purposes of this scholarship, as a student who intends at least one more year of full-time undergraduate study beginning in the fall.
  7. Must enroll full time.

Additional Information: Scholars are selected on the basis of the following: demonstrated commitment to tribal public policy or Native American health care (commitment is demonstrated through substantial contributions to and participation in campus activities, research, tribal involvement, community or public service); course of study and proposed career likely to lead to position where nominee can make significant contributions to the shaping of either tribal public policy or Native American health care issues, whether through scientific advances, public or political service, or community action; and leadership, character, desire to make a difference, general well-roundedness. Scholars will be announced on May 1. Recipients are required to attend the Udall Scholar Orientation. The Foundation will arrange travel from the scholar's home or school; lodging and meals are provided.

Award Amount: Scholarship recipients will receive the following: up to $5,000 annually for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses; and access to a network of environmental, Native American health and tribal policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv. The scholarship is non-renewable; students may reapply once. Honorable mention recipients may join the alumni listserv.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Each candidate must be nominated by the faculty representative at his/her college or university. In order to find his/her faculty representative, the student should visit the 'How to Apply' link. Nomination materials will be mailed to each faculty representative in October and are also available online from the Morris K. Udall Foundation website. To access the online application, the student's FacRep must register him/her as a potential nominee. All applicants must use the online application; paper applications will not be accepted. Each nomination package must include the following: a completed 'Institutional Nomination Form'; a completed and signed 'Udall Scholarship Application' (sample application available for reference); a typed (12-point font), signed and dated essay of no more than 800 words discussing a significant public speech, legislative act, or public policy statement by Congressman Morris K. Udall or Secretary of Interior Stewart L. Udall and its affect on the nominee's field of study, interests and career goals; three letters of recommendation that speak to his/her leadership, public service, and academic achievements; and official transcripts for all college coursework completed. The application and essay must be typed; handwritten applications will not be accepted. The complete nomination package must be submitted to the student's faculty representative, who will then forward it to the Udall Foundation. Nomination packages must be received at the foundation by 11:59 p.m. MST on the deadline date. Please note: Faculty representatives may set internal deadlines of up to six months earlier than the Udall Foundation deadline date; the student should check with his/her representative for details.
