Thomas G. Chicago, ILMajor: Mathematics
We live in an era where “the next big thing” is always around the corner. Like moths to a flame, we are drawn to the latest shiny gadgets, which have a wide variety of applications. They provide countless sources of stimulation, ranging from time-wasting games such as Angry Birds and Temple Run, to social networking sites like MyBook and FaceSpace. While the Droids and the Apples may seem like luxury items which can only bring good, they are fundamentally flawed.
When it is first released, everyone is awed by “the next big thing.” However, it does not take long before the object becomes obsolete, and a new, better model arrives to take its place. What society needs is not something that has a planned date of expiration. It needs something that can be used for the next thousand years without getting old.
I envision a device that can stimulate all of the senses. Once the user is jacked in and booted up, they enter an abstract world, in which anything is possible. For example, the user can create music simply through will, or they can recreate the most treasured of memories. The potential uses for this device are without limit. As a result, it would never lose its popularity.
The inquisitive reader may wonder, “But how would one create such an amazing contraption?” The answer is simple, really. It already exists. I like to call it The Human Mind. Appreciate it, and use it with care. The possibilities are endless.
