Number of Awards & Eligibility: Over 260 ELCA seminary students have been awarded last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be nominated by a synod or congregation with a Fund for Leaders endowment fund. Do not apply unless your synod or congregation has invited you to do so.
  2. Must be enrolling or enrolled at an ELCA seminary. Theological Education for Emerging Ministries (TEEM) students are eligible.
  3. Must be pursuing rostered ministry in the ELCA.
  4. Must be considered by the synod to be in good standing in the ELCA candidacy process.
  5. May also be recipients of Fund for Leaders full-tuition scholarships.
  6. Must be Part-time student, cannot be full-time interns during the upcoming year.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: The ELCA Fund for Leaders Synod or Congregation Scholarship is offered to ELCA seminary students by synods and congregations that have established a scholarship endowment fund through Fund for Leaders. Students must be first nominated by a synod or congregation with a fund in order to apply.

Application requirements for the ECLA Synod and Congregation Scholarships are:

  • Nomination
  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
Additional Information: The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. ECLA Synod and Congregation Scholarships vary in value based on each participating synod’s or congregation’s available funds and the number of students awarded scholarships. In the past, awards have ranged in value from hundreds to thousands of dollars per year. Students nominated by their synod submit an application online through ELCA GrantMaker. Synod scholarships are one-year awards.

Award Amount: In the 2018-2019 academic year alone, the fund will provide over $2.6 million in scholarships.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $50,000.
