Number of Awards & Eligibility: 16 awards offered annually, four for each class (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior).
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be an incoming freshman or undergraduate transfer student.
  4. Must be a dependent child of an active ordained Pan-Methodist Commission clergy or deacon who is under appointment by the resident bishop to full-time service in one of the following churches: United Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Christian Methodist Episcopal, or Union American Methodist Episcopal.
  5. Must be a full-time student (12 or more credit hours per semester).
  6. Must enroll prior to reaching his/her 23rd birthday.
  7. Must plan to attend American University in Washington, D.C.
  8. Must have a parent who is Methodist.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for high school seniors and undergraduate students who are 22 years old or younger and planning to attend American University in Washington, D.C. The student must be a dependent of an active ordained Pan-Methodist Commission clergy or deacon who is under appointment by the Resident Bishop to full-time service in the church.

Application requirements for the American University Methodist Tuition Remission Scholarship are:

Additional Information: As a courtesy to the churches associated with the Pan-Methodist Commission, American University offers a 50 percent United Methodist Ministerial Tuition Remission Scholarship to dependent children of clergy under appointment and serving full-time in the following churches: United Methodist; African Methodist Episcopal; African Methodist Episcopal Zion; Christian Methodist Episcopal; Union American Methodist Episcopal.

Award Amount: Up to half-tuition annually, renewable for up to three additional years. The 2015-2016 tuition rate for full-time undergraduate students was $42,556 per academic year. Please note: The scholarship is not available for summer sessions. Detailed information on tuition and fees is available online at www.american.edu/finance/studentaccounts/Tuition-and-Fees-Information.cfm. To continue receiving the scholarship, the student must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher as proof of academic progress toward earning his/her degree. The student must also show proof of his/her registration each semester to the scholarship officer in the Office of the University Chaplain.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $85,112.

Applications are available online on the American University (AU) website. In addition to the completed scholarship application, the student must include a copy of the active appointment for the person under whose eligibility he/she is applying from a current church directory. The student may also provide answers to the optional essay questions posted on the website. The essays are not required but are helpful in the selection process. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Students must be admitted to AU to use this scholarship. Admissions information is available online at www.american.edu/admissions/index.cfm. Application deadlines are as follows for incoming freshmen: fall early decision, Nov. 15; fall early decision 2 and regular decision, Jan. 15; spring regular decision, Oct. 1. Application deadlines are as follows for transfer students: fall (for scholarship eligibility), March 1; spring, Nov. 1; and summer, April 1.
