Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll as a college junior, senior, or graduate student by Aug. 31, with an accounting curriculum planned that reflects the intention to sit for the CPA Exam.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be enrolled in an Illinois college or university.
  5. Must major in accounting.
  6. Must be an African-American.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: College juniors, seniors and/or graduate students who are Illinois residents currently attending an accounting program of study at an Illinois college or university with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible for this award. Students must be African-American.

Application requirements for the Herman J. Neal Scholarship are:

Additional Information: A student who receives a full-tuition waiver or reimbursement for tuition is not eligible for this scholarship. However, the society encourages each student to apply if he/she is unsure of other forms of support at the time of application. Each scholarship will be awarded to a student who shows significant potential to become a CPA and who demonstrates academic achievement, as well as financial need.

Award Amount: Up to $4,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and fees and can include up to $500 in expenses for books and required classroom materials. It does not cover costs of CPA Exam review courses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications are available online from the Illinois CPA Society website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit his/her most recent academic transcript, a resume, two letters of recommendation, and two essays of no more than 150 words on the topics listed within the application. The applicant may complete an optional essay detailing his/her special circumstances. All materials must be submitted by the deadline date.
