$3,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year. Scholarship recipients will also receive a one-year Material Advantage membership. Through the Material Advantage program, students are members of the following organizations serving the materials science and engineering community: American Ceramic Society (ACerS), Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST), ASM International, and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).

This scholarship was established in 2005 by the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) to commemorate the life and industry service of William E. Schwabe, a pioneer in the application of electrical engineering technology to the advancement and refinement of electric arc furnace steelmaking. AIST Foundation Scholarship awards are intended to attract talented and dedicated students and to encourage them to pursue careers within the iron and steel industry. The AIST Foundation Board of Trustees administers the scholarships. Please note: Students do not have to be AIST members or be dependents of AIST members to apply for this award. Scholarship winners will be announced on June 30.
