Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 150 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a veteran that served during times of war.
  3. Must be a legal resident of Alabama.
  4. Must attend one of the following colleges/universities: Alabama Southern Community College; Athens College; Auburn University; Bevill State Community College; Calhoun Community College; Chattahoochee Valley State College; Jacksonville State University; Jefferson State Community College; Shelton State Community College; Southern Union Junior College; Troy State University; University of Alabama - Birmingham; University of Huntsville; University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa; University of North Alabama; and Wallace Community College - Selma.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Alabama high school seniors who have a parent or grandparent who is a veteran that served during times of war. Students must plan to attend selected colleges in Alabama.

  • Unofficial Transcript
  • Photo
  • Copy of service record
  • SAT/ACT scores
Additional Information: All items sent to the American Legion will be considered property of the legion and will not be returned. Scholarships offered under this program have more restrictive eligibility requirements, such as requiring the student to reside in a certain Alabama county. Students should see the website for details. Awards are restricted to students who attend institutions having on-campus housing. Only recipients of the scholarship will be notified of the award.

Award Amount: $850 annually, renewable for the length of time it takes to complete undergraduate study, within reason.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $850.

Applications are available from the Alabama Department Adjutant of the American Legion's website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a small photo; a copy of the service record of the veteran on which he/she is basing eligibility; an unofficial transcript of his/her scholastic record; two letters of reference; and SAT and/or ACT scores. The application and all supporting materials must be sent in one package to the address provided and be received by the deadline.
