Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually; one will be awarded to an undergraduate student, one to a graduate student, and three will be provided to pre-collegiate students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in a undergraduate or graduate program at time of entry.
  3. Must submit an essay that was produced to fulfill an undergraduate or graduate course or degree requirement.

Description: This writing contest is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who submit an essay of 3,500 to 12,500 words addressing one or more of the topics listed on the website. The work must be have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate or graduate course or degree requirement and may be submitted in English or in Spanish. Graduate Award • Submissions must be between 3,500 and 12,500 words. • Submissions may be in Spanish or English. • The Applicant must currently be registered as a graduate student and work must be related to graduate studies. Undergraduate Award • Essays must be between 2,000 and 10,500 words. • Submissions may be in Spanish or English. • Submissions must have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate course or degree requirement (please specify course, degree, and institution; for thesis chapters, please add a thesis abstract). Pre-Collegiate Award Academic, non-fiction and fiction writing are all accepted. Poetry submissions are also accepted. No minimum page length, maximum length is 25 pages. All submissions must be in .doc or .pdf file format.

Additional Information: ALBA is a non-profit organization devoted to the preservation and dissemination of the record of the American role in the 1936-1938 Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. Each entry will be judged on the basis of its originality, quality of research, and the effectiveness of its argument or presentation. Winning essays will be published on the ALBA website and an excerpt is published in ALBA's quarterly magazine The Volunteer. Application Instructions can be found on the provider website.

Award Amount: $250 for pre-collegiate students; $500 for undergraduate students; and $1,000 for graduate students. All awards are provided on a one-time basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,250.

This is a writing contest. For more information, visit the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) website. To enter, the applicant must submit an essay of 2,000 to 10,500 words addressing one of the topics listed on the website. A cover page with the student's name, address, email and telephone number must be included with the essay. Submissions should be sent as a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment to the email address provided. The essay must have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate or graduate course or degree requirement (please specify course, degree, and institution; for thesis chapters, please add a thesis abstract). Any work produced since August 2017 is eligible for the competition. Essays may be submitted in English or Spanish. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
