Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Must be an atheist, with demonstrated activism and/or activities.
  4. Must self-identify as a gay or lesbian or demonstrate a commitment to promoting equality and LGBT rights.
  5. Must be a high school senior or enrolled in college at time of application.

Description: This award is available to gay or lesbian high school seniors and currently enrolled college students. Applicants must be atheists and have a history of atheist activism and community involvement.

Additional Information: Membership in American Atheists, Inc. is not required to apply for the scholarship; however, it is required to accept the prize. Membership information is available on the organization's website. Please note: A gay and/or lesbian person may apply for both scholarships offered by American Atheists, but he/she will only be eligible to win one award. While all activism is important and will be considered, special attention will be given to students who show activism in their schools, such as starting atheist and/or freethinking groups or fighting against violations of the separation of church and state. **Please note: Merely writing an essay will not win the applicant the scholarship. The award is about activism, and the applicant's essay should be about his/her activism for the cause of atheist civil liberties, the separation of church and state, or placing a positive face on atheism. The winner will be chosen by the Youth and Family Director, the president, and/or the delegates chosen by the directors and/or officers of American Atheists.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available on the American Atheists website. In addition to the application, the following materials must be submitted: an official transcript or grade report showing the applicant's grade point average; an essay of 500 to 1,000 words detailing the applicant's atheist activism and/or activities; and all information or evidence on the applicant's atheist activism from the previous year, including newspaper clippings, replies from politicians on certain atheist issues, letters of testimony from teachers, friends or other activists, and/or evidence that he/she sponsored an atheist TV show or rally. The completed application and all supporting materials must be saved in PDF or DOC format and submitted via email. Applications must be received no later than the deadline date.
