Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to attend a South Carolina college or university.
  3. Must be a resident of South Carolina.
  4. Must have attended a South Carolina public high school for two or more years.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must have an interest in creative writing (poetry), drama, composing music, dance, or the visual arts (two-dimensional design).
  7. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: South Carolina high school seniors who have an interest in creative writing (poetry), drama, composing music, dance, or the visual arts (two-dimensional design) are eligible to enter this scholarship competition. Students must have attended a South Carolina public high school for two or more years, and plan to attend a South Carolina college.

Additional Information: The South Carolina Department of Education sponsors the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program every year. This program offers 12th grade students the opportunity to compete for scholarships in drama, creative writing, music, visual arts, and dance. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and recognize academic and artistic excellence. A panel of professionals in each of the five arts areas will select a recipient in each of the disciplines. There can be only a certain number of entries per school, per discipline. This number is determined by student enrollment. Schools with an enrollment of 1 to 500 may submit 1 entry per discipline. Schools with an enrollment of 501 to 1,500 may submit 2 entries per discipline. Schools with an enrollment of 1,501 or above may submit 3 entries per discipline. Award winners will be announced in May.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarships may be used for tuition, campus room and board, and instructional resources.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $100,000.

Applications are available online at the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) webisite, and from participating high school guidance departments. Each school has a designated Archibald Rutledge school scholarship coordinator. Students may apply to compete for only one of the five arts disciplines: Creative writing; dance; music; theatre; or visual arts. In addition to the application the student must complete an original composition. Additional criteria that each applicant/composition must meet are included on the individual entry forms. Students must complete the application and mail original compositions (and other required documentation) to the South Carolina Department of Education. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
