Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be attending a high school in a county served by The Ashley Foundation as of the beginning of the current academic year. The following counties in Maryland are eligible: Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Washington.
  3. Must be a cancer survivor or be currently diagnosed with cancer.
  4. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for international and U.S. high school seniors who are cancer survivors or are currently diagnosed with cancer. Students must be attending a high school in a county served by The Ashley Foundation as of the beginning of the current academic year. The following counties in Maryland are eligible: Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Washington.

Additional Information: This scholarship, awarded in memory of Ashley Elizabeth Tamburri, serves to encourage graduating seniors who are cancer survivors or are currently coping with a cancer diagnosis to pursue an educational goal. Scholarships are awarded based on the essay submitted with the application. The scholarship committee is looking for applicants who best exemplify the following in their essays: the life values and career goals of Ashley Tamburri, and a desire to use their cancer experience to help others coping with a life-threatening or life-altering event. *Please note: The scholarship is not based upon financial need or scholastic ability. Scholarships will be awarded on or before April 30 each year. Scholarship recipients must agree to have their name, photo and essay published in various media utilized by the foundation. The scholarships are not awarded to children of foundation board members and to others who may not be eligible due to affiliation with The Ashley Foundation.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years at the recipient's choice. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university selected by the recipient. The awarding of a scholarship is dependent upon the recipient complying with scholarship guidelines and the availability of funding.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on The Ashley Foundation's website. Applications are accepted between March 1 and March 31 each year. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: two letters of recommendation from two different academic teachers addressing why he/she should receive the scholarship; a letter from his/her physician supporting the cancer diagnosis (medical information will be kept confidential and will only be utilized to support the qualification of consideration for the scholarship); an acceptance letter from the college or university of his/her choice; and a typed, double-spaced essay of 500 to 1,200 words discussing the question, 'How has my experience with cancer impacted my life values and career goals?'. Please note: One section of the application must be completed by the student's high school guidance counselor. The application and all supporting materials must be mailed to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
