Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  2. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada.
  3. Must be enrolled in a travel and tourism- or hospitality-related program of study at a college or university in the United States or Canada.
  4. Must be enrolled at an accredited two-year college, entering his/her second year in the fall of the calendar year of application and will have completed 30 credit hours by the end of this semester or term OR be enrolled at an accredited four-year college or university, entering his/her junior year in the fall of the calendar year of application and will have completed 60 credit hours by the end of this semester or term; OR be enrolled at a four-year college or university, entering his/her senior year in the fall of the calendar year of application and will have completed 90 or more credit hours by the end of this semester or term.
  5. Must enroll part time or full time.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Description: U.S. or Canadian undergraduate students enrolled in a tourism and travel or hospitality program of study are eligible for this award. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Tourism Cares Scholarship awards are based on merit and awarded through a competitive process. The Academic Scholarship Selection Committee makes their selections based on academic performance, extracurricular and volunteer activities and experiences, motivation, and leadership potential. The recipient will be notified in late May, and the award will be distributed in the summer.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. Past recipients may apply again as long as they continue to meet eligibility criteria and application is made in a different calendar year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the Tourism Cares website. The student must create an account to access the online application. Only one application is necessary to apply for all scholarships for which he/she wishes to be considered. The following documents must be uploaded to the online application: a copy of his/her birth certificate or passport (preferred) or alien registration card; a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (travel, tourism, or hospitality faculty preferred); a letter of recommendation from an industry professional for whom he/she has worked (employer from the travel, tourism, or hospitality field preferred); a resume; a two-page essay written in English addressing the topic listed on the application; and an additional two-page essay addressing the specific topic for this scholarship. All documents must be uploaded as PDF files. The student must request an official transcript be sent directly from his/her institution in a sealed envelope to Tourism Cares at the mailing address provided. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. ET on the deadline date.
