Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, nine scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  3. Must be a resident of Iowa.
  4. Must have worked toward reducing homophobia and increasing understanding and tolerance of gay and lesbian issues.

Description: This scholarship is available for Iowa high school seniors who have worked in their community to reduce homophobia and increase awareness and tolerance of gay and lesbian issues.

Additional Information: The First Friday Breakfast Club (FFBC) is an educational, non-profit corporation for gay and bisexual men. There are no restrictions or limitations in the selection procedures based upon sex, race, religion, creed, marital or employment status or sexual orientation of the prospective recipient or his/her relatives. The scholarship committee will award scholarships on May 1.

Award Amount: Up to $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $27,000.

Applications are available at the First Friday Breakfast Club (FFBC) of Iowa website. In addition to the application, the student must submit responses for the five short answer and one essay questions listed on the application. The essay should be limited to one sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper, and the short answer responses should be limited to two sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" paper for all. An official high school transcript and a list of extracurricular activities, community involvement, and work experience must also be included. Please note: The student's counselor/adviser must sign the application affirming that all school-related information is correct. All application materials and supporting documents must be sent to Jonathan Wilson at the address provided, and be postmarked by the deadline date.
