In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a graduate student of any age OR an undergraduate student over the age of 25.
  2. Must be a resident of North America.
  3. Must consider oneself to be a free-thinker/non-religious.
  4. This award is for U.S. and international students.

Description: This writing contest is available to graduate students and undergraduate students over the age of 25 in North America who consider themselves to be free-thinkers/non-religious.

Application requirements for the FFRF Brian Bolton Essay Contest for Graduate Students/Mature Students are:

  • Essay
  • Biography (one paragraph)
Additional Information: Winners will be asked to provide a photograph suitable for publication. By entering the contest, winning students agree to have their essays printed in full or in part in 'Freethought Today,' the foundation's newspaper, and later posted online on the foundation's website. Eligible entrants will be offered a complimentary freethought book.

Award Amount: A first-prize award of $3,000, a second-prize award of $2,000, a third-prize award of $1000, a fourth-prize award of $500, and a fifth-prize award of $300. One or more honorable mention awards of $200 may also be awarded. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,167.

Additional information about this scholarship can be found on the Freedom From Religion Foundation website. To enter, the applicant must write a typed, double-spaced essay of 600-750 words addressing the current year's topic. The applicant must also include a paragraph biography identifying the college or university he/she is planning to attend, and his/her intended major and interests. The applicant must also provide his/her permanent address, phone number and a valid email address. The applicant should not include a resume. The essay and the supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
