Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 20 awards offered each year. The number of awards offered each year may vary and is dependent on the number of qualified applicants and the amount of funding available.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be the natural or adopted dependent child of a Georgia law enforcement officer, fire fighter, EMT, correction officer, or prison guard who was permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty.
  3. Must be a legal resident of Georgia for 12 consecutive months or more immediately preceding the date of registration for the school term for which a grant is being sought.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
  5. Must enroll full-time (12 credit hours or more per term).
  6. Must attend a Georgia public college, university, or technical institution.
  7. Must be enrolled in a certificate or technical degree program, or an undergraduate associate’s or bachelor’s degree program.

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are legal residents of Georgia are attending a Georgia public college, university, or technical institute. The Student must be the natural or adopted dependent child of a Georgia law enforcement officer, fire fighter, EMT, correction officer, or prison guard who was permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty.

Additional Information: The purpose of the Public Safety Memorial Grant is to provide educational grant assistance to the children of Georgia law enforcement officers, fire fighters, EMTs, correction officers, and prison guards who were permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty, to attend a public college, university, or technical college in the state of Georgia. The GPSM Grant is funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education. The applicant must: not be receiving a scholarship or grant from or through any state agency other than Georgia; be in a matriculated status in an organized program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate; maintain satisfactory academic progress in accordance with the Title IV standards and practices of the institution; not be obligated to pay a refund on a grant or scholarship obtained from or through GSFC; not be in default on any student loan obtained on or through GSFC; meet Selective Service requirements; and never have received a baccalaureate degree.

Award Amount: Recipients receive an award that covers their total cost of attendance, minus any other student financial aid, at an eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia, not to exceed $18,000 per award year. Recipients are eligible to receive this award for up to the total duration of 8 semesters or 12 quarters of college attendance. Students must re-apply each year for renewal.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $72,000.
