Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund

Number of Awards & Eligibility: 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school or GED graduate or older to apply for this undergraduate award. The student cannot previously have earned a bachelor's degree.
  4. Must be a resident of Hempstead County, Arkansas for at least 30 days preceding the deadline for receipt of completed application.
  5. Must be single, legally separated, divorced or widowed.
  6. Must have legal custody and sole responsibility of one or more children under the age of 18.
  7. Must have a low income at or near poverty level.
  8. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  9. Must be pursuing a career-oriented course of study (full- or part-time) to ensure a better standard of living for his/her family.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hempstead County, Arkansas residents who are pursuing a career-oriented course of study (full- or part-time) to ensure a better standard of living for their families. Students must be single (never married, legally separated, divorced, or widowed) with legal custody and sole responsibility for one or more children under the age of 18.

Application requirements for the Hempstead County Single Parent Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide supplemental financial assistance to those single parents who are pursuing a course of instruction which will improve their income-earning potential. The student must be the recipient of or be in the process of applying for a Pell Grant in order to qualify for this award. The Pell Grant is applied for by filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices.

Award Amount: $375 to $750 per semester, depending on the student's enrollment status. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable, but students may reapply each semester if they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $563.

Applications are available on the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: verification of enrollment (letter from registrar or schedule of classes); transcript of high school or college work (whichever is most recent) or GED certificate; three letters of recommendation (one letter may be from a family member, and the other two must be from a professional, academic or other non-family reference); a statement of goals that includes details on why his/her particular course of study was chosen, why this scholarship is needed, and other information about himself/herself which may be helpful in evaluating the application; and proof of income and resources (tax returns, letter from employer, printout from local DHS office, last four consecutive check stubs, etc.). The application and all supporting materials must be mailed to the address provided.
