Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be currently enrolled in a college or university located within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.
  3. Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student.
  4. Must enroll part time or full time.
  5. Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application.

Description: U.S. and international undergraduate and graduate students who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to enter this essay contest. Students must be currently enrolled in a college or university located within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.

Additional Information: Submissions will be judged on content, correctness of facts, grammar, style, and originality. Judges will look for clear, original essays that are logically organized and well-supported. The judges will select the top ten essays through the criteria listed above. The top five finalists will then have an opportunity to use social media to help determine their final placement. The finalists in positions six through ten will be honorable mention winners and will be notified after the public voting period close. Honorable mention winners will not be selected by votes. A page will be created on MesotheliomaHelp.org for the essays. A link to the essays will be provided to the finalists when they are notified of their placement. Finalists will be notified and will have three weeks to garner votes for their essays and to request citations (links) from other academic sources. Finalists should encourage their friends and families to read their essays through sharing on Facebook, Google+ or via Twitter postings. A specific hashtag will be used to track the activity. The winners will be determined by a combination of the number of votes for their essays and for the number of citations (links) from other academic works. Note that links are weighted more heavily than votes and each citation counts as 100 votes. Previous first-place winners are not eligible for participation.

Award Amount: Awards are offered as follows: first prize $2,500; second prize, $1,250; third prize, $750; fourth prize, $500. Each winner will be awarded a check from the law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP. These funds must be used to pay for college tuition and/or education-related expenses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

Applications are available online on the MesotheliomaHelp.org website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following materials: an essay of 750 to 1,500 words on one of the mesothelioma-related topics listed on the scholarship website; a small photograph (head shot); and a short biography. The application must be submitted via email to the address provided. Only one essay per student is accepted. Submissions are accepted from February 1 to July 20.
