University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Foundation
This award covers the full cost of attendance (cost of tuition, room, board, books, and miscellaneous expenses) annually, renewable for up to three years. The stipend for the academic year totals $31,500 for Commonwealth of Virginia residents and $62,000 for non-residents.
The number of awards offered varies annually. In prior years, a total of 27 awards were offered.
Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Jefferson Scholarships are granted to candidates who have undergone a rigorous selection process. Each year the foundation identifies finalists through two avenues: 45 regional competitions around the country, and a separate competition for all students, including international applicants to the University of Virginia, attending schools not eligible to compete in the regional competitions. Throughout December and January, the regional selection committee will review all nomination forms, conducts interviews, and makes recommendations on finalist(s) for the competition. In February, after admission verification, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation office will notify all nominees, sending an appropriate letter to both successful and unsuccessful candidates, with copies to regional selection chairs and guidance counselors; upon receipt of copies, regional chairs will also send personal letters to all successful and unsuccessful candidates. Recipients must notify the foundation of scholarship acceptance by April 17. The final list of Jefferson Scholarship recipients will be released in May.
