Number of Awards & Eligibility: One to seven awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be a leukemia patient and/or be a child of a non-surviving leukemia patient. A note from the treating doctor must be supplied to certify that the applicant or the applicant's parent has leukemia.
  4. Must enroll full time at an accredited college or university.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are leukemia patients and/or the child of a non-surviving leukemia patient. Students must also have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and enroll full time at an accredited college or university.

Additional Information: The Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund awards annual scholarships to help improve the quality of life for those affected by leukemia. The focus of the scholarship is on supporting secondary education for leukemia patients and/or children of non-surviving leukemia patients. This scholarship is offered nationwide. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Recipients are selected without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, handicap, or national origin.

Award Amount: Awards typically range from $2,000 to $3,000 annually, depending on the level of financial need, cost of tuition, available funding and any other special circumstances. Award amount will be determined at the discretion of the scholarship review committee. Awards may be renewable and eligibility will be based on the scholarship criteria.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the Orange County Community Foundation website and must be completed online. In addition to a completed application, the student must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation from a member of his/her school staff and an unrelated adult who has been involved with the applicant in some significant way outside of school (each letter must be sealed in its original envelope and signed by the sender across the seal); a copy of his/her official transcript of grades; an essay on the topic listed on the application; a note from the treating doctor to certify that the applicant or the applicant's parent has leukemia; a recent photo; a copy of the first two pages of his/her most current U.S. Income Tax Return or the first page of Form 1040EZ that applies to the applicant and/or his/her parents; and a completed financial aid form. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the deadline date.
