Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 705 scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Minnesota.
  3. Must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational school in Minnesota.
  4. Must meet enroll at least three-quarter time (undergraduate student) or at least half time (graduate student).
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  6. Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
  7. Must have one-fourth or more American Indian ancestry.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Minnesota undergraduate and graduate students who are of one-quarter or more American Indian ancestry and are attending accredited institutions in Minnesota. The student must demonstrate financial need by being qualified for a Pell or state grant.

Additional Information: The Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible Minnesota resident students who are of one-fourth or more Indian ancestry and demonstrate financial need for an award. Eligible students must be qualified for a Pell or state grant.

Award Amount: Up to $4,000 annually for undergraduate students and up to $6,000 annually for graduate students. Award amounts are based on need. Students are eligible to receive scholarship funding for a maximum of ten years, five years for undergraduate study and an additional five years for graduate-level study. Undergraduate students seeking less than a four-year degree can receive a maximum of three years of scholarship funding in order to preserve two years of eligibility to complete a four-year degree. Students may receive the scholarship for only one degree per undergraduate educational level and one terminal degree.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,979.

Applications are available online at the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (MOHE) website. Applications may be completed online or downloaded and completed in paper form. The student must submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to be considered. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The student must also submit documentation of his/her American Indian ancestry that shows at least 1/4 blood quantum (unless the student has applied for this scholarship before and submitted documentation at that time). The student must request that his/her school's financial aid office complete the school budget section of the application. The priority deadline for submission of application materials is July 1. Please note: Scholarships are awarded on a 'first come - first served' basis based on the date the student's complete application is received.
