In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must demonstrate a sincere desire to pursue a career as a journalist in Spanish language television or radio. This applies to students who are planning careers in Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast or online media.
  4. Must be Hispanic. The student must be willing to author an essay in Spanish explaining why he/she is seeking a career as a Spanish-language broadcast journalist.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award. A graduate student must be in his/her first year of college.

Description: This award is for U.S. students who are high school seniors or older at time of application. Applicants must be Hispanic and demonstrate a sincere desire to pursue a career as a journalist in Spanish language television or radio (includes students who are planning careers in Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast or online media).

Additional Information: Recipients are selected based on the following criteria: commitment to the field of journalism, academic achievement, financial need and community awareness. Those who are selected for this scholarship will be given the opportunity to intern with either the news division of the Univision network or with an Univision affiliate near them. Scholarship recipients will be notified by late June or early summer.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the NAHJ website. Applicants must be student members of NAHJ. To become a member, please visit the membership application page and join online with a credit card or download the membership form and mail it to NAHJ with a check. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit the following: unofficial transcripts from each institution attended in sealed envelopes; a resume of no more than one page listing his/her educational background, work history, awards, journalism-related internships, other scholarships, language proficiency and any work done for his/her school or community newspaper, radio and/or television; two reference letters in two separately sealed envelopes from people who are familiar with his/her academic and/or journalism work; up to three samples of his/her best work including print, television, radio or photojournalism; a 1,000-word autobiography in the third person in the form of a news story; a copy of his/her parents' W-2 form; and an essay in Spanish (written in the third person as a news story) that explains why he/she seeks a career as a Spanish-language broadcast journalist. All materials must be postmarked by the deadline date.
