In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must self-identify as either a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender person, or as a supporter of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people.
  5. Must be a resident of San Mateo or Santa Clara counties in California.

Description: This award is available for U.S. and international high school seniors who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, as well as supporters and allies. Applicants must reside in San Mateo or Santa Clara counties in California, must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and must show an interest in service to the GLBT community.

Additional Information: San Jose/Peninsula PFLAG scholarships provide $2,000 for each selected high school senior, residing in or attending high school in Santa Clara or San Mateo County. These scholarships are given to individuals of any gender identity or sexual orientation whose history, activities, and personal plans demonstrate support for justice and equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. The awards are provided to students who will be attending an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or business/technical school in fall, to offset the costs of tuition, books, or required fees.

Award Amount: $6,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available at the San Jose Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) website. In addition to a completed application form, students must submit two letters of reference - one from a teacher or faculty member, and one from an individual who is familiar with the applicant's community service efforts. All application materials and supporting documents must be faxed or emailed to the contact information provided above, and must be received by the deadline date.
