Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be the dependent of a parent or guardian who has been an American Federation of Teachers member for one year or more.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior at time of application.

Description: This award is available for graduating high school seniors who have a parent or legal guardian that has been an American Federation of Teachers (AFT) member for at least one year.

Application requirements for the Robert G. Porter Scholars Program are:

  • Personal statement
  • Work experience
Additional Information: Robert G. Porter Scholars Program monies may be used only at institutions that are accredited to offer postsecondary degrees or certificates by an accrediting agency certified for that purpose by the U.S. Department of Education. No AFT state or local staff members may apply.

Applications are available on the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also include the following: an essay of 500 words or less addressing the topic listed on the application; a personal statement describing how this scholarship will enable him/her to attend the college of his/her choice; a listing of his/her work experience; an essay describing his/her most important leadership role; two letters of recommendation; and an official high school transcript in a sealed envelope. One letter of recommendation must be from a teacher or counselor and the other from a community representative, such as a minister, rabbi, priest, scout leader, employer or community service organization. The application must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
