Dr. Ruth Matsuura created this scholarship for high school graduates, who through higher education are able to pursue careers that positively affect the lives of many. Senator Matsuura worked in the field of agriculture, traveling to India as a missionary to teach people modern agricultural methods to grow crops and end famine. Dr. Ruth Matsuura helped many people as a pediatrician. After serving in India as missionaries, they made their home in Hilo where Senator Matsuura was a state legislator for over 16 years and Dr. Matsuura practiced pediatrics for more than thirty years. Education opened doors for them that would have been closed otherwise. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.
