Fifty-four regional finalists will receive awards of $1,000 each, and six regional winners will receive awards of $3,000 each. National runners-up will receive scholarships ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. The first-place national winners will receive awards of $100,000 each. All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable. Individual and team entries receive separate awards. Teams must divide winnings equally among team members (except for regional finalist awards), while individual participants will receive the entire amount.

There are four phases in the judging of the research competition: initial judging, semifinals, regional finals and national finals. From the initial judging, up to 300 outstanding projects are selected and students are recognized as semifinalists. From the semifinalists, up to ten projects (up to five individual and up to five team projects) from each of six geographic regions will be selected to compete at the regional competition. The regional finalists will be assigned to one of the regional competition locations by the College Board. Students will be required to prepare additional presentation pieces besides their research report. The six individual and six team regional winners will compete in the national competition.
