Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies. In 2020 SPIE awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 78 outstanding individuals for their potential long-range contribution to optics, photonics, or other related fields.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be studying in the field of optics, photonics, imaging, optoelectronics or other related program.
  3. Must enroll full time.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and/or graduate award.

Description: International and U.S. students who are high school seniors or older are eligible for this award. Students must be studying full time in the field of optics, photonics, imaging or optoelectronics or other related program.

Additional Information: Application forms must show demonstrated personal commitment to and involvement of the applicant in the fields of optics, optical science and engineering, and indicate how the granting of the award will contribute to these fields. Applications will be judged by the SPIE Scholarship Committee on the basis of the long range contribution which the granting of the award will make to these fields.

Award Amount: $3,000 to $11,000 annually, non-renewable.Past recipients may be eligible to reapply in multiple years if SPIE reporting requirements are met. Any new scholarship application must show new activities or research, beyond that upon which a previous award was based.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $33,000.

Applications are available from the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) website. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit two sealed letters of recommendation and a 450-word essay. No more than 10 pages will be accepted. All application materials must be submitted in English. If the applicant is not an SPIE member, he/she must submit a membership application (accompanied by dues payment) along with his/her scholarship application. High school students are eligible for one free year of membership. All application materials must be submitted online by close of business (Pacific Standard Time) on the deadline date. Materials arriving after that date will not considered.
