Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually varies based on the number of qualified students who apply.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  4. Must plan to attend the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.21 to 3.5 to be considered for the Opportunity award; 3.51 to 3.86 to be considered for the Excellence award; or 3.87 or higher to be considered for the Distinction award.
  6. Must have an average ACT score of 21 to be considered for the Opportunity award; an average score of 24 to be considered for the Excellence award; and an average score of 27 to be considered for the Distinction award. Equivalent SAT scores will also be accepted.
  7. Must plan to attend a college or university in Arkansas.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school seniors who plan to attend the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, and an ACT score of 21 or higher (or the SAT equivalent).

Application requirements for the UA Fort Smith Merit Scholarships Program are:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Immunization form
  • Official SAT/ACT scores
Additional Information: There are three awards given through this program: the Academic Distinction Scholarship, the Academic Excellence Scholarship, Sebastian County Academic Opportunity and the Academic Opportunity Scholarship.

Award Amount: There are four different merit awards for freshmen ranging from $11,000 to $19,000. Scholarships are awarded as long as funding remains available. Eligible students will be those high school seniors graduating in the spring and begin seeking a bachelor degree through UAFS in the Fall of that same year. All scholarships are for 4 years or completion of undergraduate degree.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $19,000.

Scholarship information is available online on the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UA Fort Smith) website by clicking on the 'Freshman Scholarships' link. To be considered for this scholarship, the student must apply for admission to UA Fort Smith. Admissions applications are available on the UA Fort Smith website by clicking on the 'Admissions' link; students may apply online or download a paper application. A separate scholarship application is not required. In addition to a completed admissions application, the student must submit the following: an official high school transcript or proof of GED completion; proof of immunization against measles, mumps, and rubella; and an official ACT or SAT student profile report or ASSET or COMPASS evaluation scores. Awards are given on a first-come, first-served basis until funding runs out. It is recommended, however, that students apply by the priority deadline of Nov. 15.
