Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a current member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) OR a dependent of a member.
  3. Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field in the upcoming academic year.
  4. Must be enrolled at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.

Description: This award is available to members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) and their dependents. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.

Additional Information: A preliminary screening committee will select applications to be reviewed by an independent scholarship selection committee. The decisions of the committee will be published in the UMW Journal. The scholarship can be used only for education expenses. It is not transferable and will be forfeited if the recipient does not remain a student in good standing.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship will be paid in two equal installments, one in September and the other in January, as long as the winner has been accepted to a degree program at a qualified institution.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) website. In addition to a completed application, each applicant must submit the following materials: an official high school transcript; an official transcript of any college (or other advanced) study; a 500-word essay that addresses the questions listed on the application; and a description of his/her extracurricular activities and hobbies. Each applicant must also list three references on the application. These references must submit letters of recommendation directly to the UMWA-Lorin E. Kerr Scholarship Fund at the address provided. At least one recommendation must be from an instructor or teacher. The student must mail the application to the address provided. All materials must be postmarked by the deadline date.
