In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a member, spouse of a member, or dependent child of a member in a union that is participating in any Union Plus program. The member must have a one-year or more continous good membership standing.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be accepted into an accredited college, university, community college, or technical or trade school to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This award is for a U.S. undergraduate and graduate student who is a a member, spouse of a member, or dependent child of a member in a union that is participating in any Union Plus program. The applicant must be accepted into a college, university, or trade program at time of application.

Application requirements for the Union Plus Scholarship Program are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Essay
  • Union verification form
Additional Information: Awards will be based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. Applications will be judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators. Students selected to received a scholarship will be sent notification in early June.

Award Amount: $500 to $4,000 annually, non-renewable. This award is to be used by the recipient starting the fall term.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.

Applications are available online on the Union Privilege website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a sealed letter of reference from a teacher or other adult who is familiar with the student's achievements and abilities (the applicant should instruct his/her reference to sign his/her name across the seal of the envelope); an essay of 500 words or less describing the applicant's career goals and aspirations, highlighting his/her relationship with the union and the labor movement, and explaining why he/she deserves a union scholarship; and a union verification form signed by an officer of the member's local union. Applications must be completed online by the deadline date.
