The University of Maine's residency scholarships are intended to attract and retain top academic achievers from diverse areas of Maine and surrounding states who seek intellectual stimulation and opportunities for personal development. This award, in honor of William Bingham, 2nd, is for students who reside in the town of Bethel Maine, or Oxford County, Maine. Each year, an additional scholarship will be provided by this fund in honor of Payson Smith to local residents who are pursuing a degree in education at the University of Maine. The scholarship committee will select recipients and determine award amounts based on consultation with the headmaster of The Gould Academy in Bethel.
