Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of eligible applicants.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  2. Must be an incoming first-time freshman.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be a National Merit Finalist.
  5. Must list the University of Oregon as his/her first-choice school on the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Scholarship Application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. students who plan to enroll at the University of Oregon as freshmen. The student must be a National Merit Finalist and list UO as his/her first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Application requirements for the University of Oregon National Merit Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Official SAT/ACT scores
  • Essay
  • Personal statement (opt.)
Additional Information: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), in conjunction with the UO, awards merit scholarships to selected academically talented high school seniors for undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon. Students with the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT from each state are named as semifinalists. To become a finalist, semifinalists must have an outstanding high school record, be recommended by their school's principal, and submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test performance. Each student's NMSC Scholarship Application—which includes a self-descriptive essay, record of leadership, and community activities—is also evaluated. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation begins notifying finalists of their awards in early April of their senior year of high school.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or higher to renew.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Scholarship information is available online on the University of Oregon (UO) website. To apply for this scholarship, the student must apply for admission to UO by Jan. 15. Admissions information is available online at admissions.uoregon.edu/freshmen. Required admission documents include the following: official high school transcripts; ACT and/or SAT scores (sent directly from the testing service or included on transcripts); an application essay of 500 words or less sharing information that is not included elsewhere in his/her application; and an explanation of personal circumstances that affected academic performance (optional). The student must also complete a detailed scholarship application. This application will be sent by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) directly to qualified students.
