Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually based on available funding and the number of applicants. In prior academic years, there were 451 total awards disbursed (418 undergraduate and 33 graduate). Priorities for awards are as follows: enlisted applicants who have previously received assistance through this program; officers who have not completed their bachelor's degree and need to complete a bachelor's degree for promotion to Captain; warrant officers seeking their associate's or bachelor's degree; any service member seeking an undergraduate college degree; any service member seeking a graduate degree.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be accepted or enrolled in one of the following: any accredited state institution of higher education in Virginia; any private, accredited, non-profit institution of higher education in Virginia whose primary purpose is to provide collegiate or graduate studies exclusive of religious or theological education; course(s) or program(s) offered by public vocation or technical schools listed on the approved school listing (must contact State Program Manager for the approved school listing).
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be accepted or enrolled in an eligible certificate or degree program (undergraduate, graduate, or professional). These grants may be used to achieve one degree program at each level of study, to include associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, and post-graduate degrees (master's, Ph.D., or law degree). Vocational-type skills considered essential for the average worker are not limited by number of credits or degree completion requirements.
  4. Must be an active member of the Virginia National Guard.
  5. This award is for U.S. students.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for Virginia undergraduate and graduate students who are active members of the Virginia National Guard. Applicants must attend a Virginia college or university.

Additional Information: All applicants for this program must meet the following criteria: have met all eligibility requirements prior to the application deadline in order to receive state tuition assistance; be in satisfactory participant/performance status and maintain good academic standing throughout the period of the grant; not flagged for any reason; have attended or been properly excused from all unit training assemblies in the past six months; and satisfactorily completed initial basic training requirements or the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) for ROTC cadets. Recipients must agree to serve and/or continue to serve with the Virginia National Guard for a period of two years following any academic period for which State Tuition Assistance is paid. Applicants must agree to repay the Commonwealth of Virginia on a prorated basis for any failure to serve the two-year service period for which state tuition is paid.

Award Amount: Grants cannot exceed in any event the total cost of tuition for the term, quarter, or semester. In the event that legislative funding prevents granting full tuition assistance to all Virginia National Guard members regardless of tuition costs, grants for private schools and non-state supported schools will not exceed the total cost of tuition of the highest tuition rate at a state-supported school. Students must apply for funding for each term in which they wish to receive assistance.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,799.

Program information is available online on the Virginia National Guard Education Services website. Any additional documentation requested must be submitted through the student's commander to the State Education Services Office. The student must submit the online application by the appropriate deadline date for the semester in which he/she wishes to receive funding. The deadline dates are as follows: spring semester (Jan. 1-May 15), Nov. 1; summer semester (May 16-Aug. 15), April 1; and fall semester (Aug. 16-Dec. 31), July 1.
