Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine or New Hampshire. The scholarship is awarded to New Hampshire residents in even-numbered years Maine residents in odd-numbered years.
  3. Must be a current member of 4-H.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior OR an individual who has graduated from high school, but has delayed going to college for no more than one year.

Additional Information: Wayne Rich was a 4-H agent and longtime supporter of 4-H. He was originally from Maine and relocated in New Hampshire. The Wayne S. Rich Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Maine or New Hampshire 4-Her for post-secondary study. It is available to a Maine student on odd numbered years and goes to a New Hampshire student through their 4-H Foundation on even numbered years. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of demonstrated academic and 4-H excellence. Recipients will be requested to attend the foundation's annual meeting to receive their scholarship in person.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarships are payable upon successful completion of the first semester of school. To receive the scholarship funds, recipients must mail a completed first-semester transcript to the foundation office. A check, made payable to the recipient, will be sent by the foundation within two weeks of receiving the transcript.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

The Wayne S. Rich Scholarship is provided only in odd-numbered years. Please check back in October 2018 for updated information about the 2019 award. Applications are available online on the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a high school academic transcript; a photocopy of his/her 4-H story; a photocopy of his/her 4-H resume; and a letter of recommendation from a 4-H leader or educator (this letter cannot be from a parent). The student should not send any materials other than those requested. The student's application must also be reviewed and signed by his/her county 4-H staff; the application will not be accepted without this signature. Contact information for county 4-H offices is available on the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation website by clicking on the 'UMaine Extension County Offices' link at the bottom of the page. The student must send his/her application to his/her county's 4-H office to be received by the deadline date. County 4-H staff must send approved applications to the foundation office.
