Elaine Chapin Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies each year. In prior years, eight scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must plan to enroll or be enrolled in an undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year institution.
  4. Must plan to enroll or be enrolled full time.
  5. Must be impacted by multiple sclerosis directly or as a family member.

Description: This award is available to U.S. high school students starting college in the fall of 2016 as well as current college freshmen, sophomore and juniors who have been impacted by multiple sclerosis both directly or as a family member.

Additional Information: In honor of the late Elaine Chapin, the Elaine Chapin Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide funds to support the postsecondary education of students impacted by multiple sclerosis either directly or as a family member. Scholarship recipients are chosen on the basis of financial need, academic standing and the impact with which multiple sclerosis has affected their lives. There is no application fee to apply for the scholarship; however, a gesture of a small donation with the submitted completed application is appreciated. Whether or not a donation is made will have no bearing on determining which students receive the scholarship awards. Checks should be made out to "Elaine Chapin Fund/NMSS." The scholarship is being run through the Gateway Area Chapter (St. Louis) of the National MS Society, and all donations are 100 percent tax deductible.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Winners from previous years are eligible to reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the Elaine Chapin Memorial Scholarship Fund website and are accepted after Nov. 1. In addition to a signed, completed application, the student must also submit: a complete transcript of grades; two letters of reference (one of which is preferred to be from a present school official on school letterhead); and a one-page essay not to exceed 500 words on the impact that multiple sclerosis has had on the student's life. Please note: All application materials must be sent in a single mailing, and applications must be received by the deadline date in order to be considered.
