Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. A child of an IAM member must be planning to graduate during the winter or by the end of the spring following application. IAM member applicants may apply whether entering college or vocational/technical school as a freshman or at a higher level with some college credits already completed.
  3. Must plan to take a regular college or vocational/technical program on a full-time basis, maintaining qualifying grades, if applying as the child of an IAM member. IAM members may enroll on a full- or part-time basis.
  4. Must be an IAM member OR the child, stepchild or legally adopted child of an IAM member. All IAM members, whether applicants or parents, must have two years of continous good standing up to and including the competition closing date. A "continuous good-standing membership" is understood to be a period of membership during which the member continuously has paid monthly dues uninterrupted by withdrawal cards. The IAM member must maintain continuous good-standing membership throughout the life of the award.
  5. Must be a resident of the United States or Canada.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Canadian and U.S. students who are members or are the children of members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) are eligible for this award. Children of members must be high school seniors at time of application, while members may apply at any time during their undergraduate studies.

Application requirements for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Scholarship Competition are:

  • Recommendation letters (up to 4)
  • SAT/ACT scores (if child)
Additional Information: The Committee attempts to select from each IAM territory applicants who have demonstrated learning ability and all-around suitability for college work or for attending vocational/technical school. In reaching this determination, many factors are taken into consideration, including: grades, attitude toward study, personal references, available test scores, the opinion of counselors and teachers and activities outside of school. For member applicants, weight is given to participation in local lodge responsibilities. Canadian students are judged according to Canadian scholastic standards. The IAM scholarship winners and honorable mentions will be announced in summer on the IAM website.

Award Amount: Awards to members are $2,000 per academic year. They are granted for a specific period from one to four years to enable the member to earn a bachelor's degree or a two-year vocational/technical certification. Awards to children of members are $1,000 per academic year. These awards are renewed each year until a bachelor's degree is obtained or for a maximum of four years, whichever occurs first. Awards to children of members attending a vocational/technical school are $2,000 per year until certification is reached or for a maximum of two years, whichever occurs first.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) website. Please note: There are separate forms and applications for children of IAM members attending college, children of IAM members attending a technical/vocational school, and IAM members. Each applicant must fill out the appropriate form. IAM members must include the following with their applications: official high school and college transcripts, including work in progress and official test scores; four reference forms, one of which must be from an IAM officer acquainted with the applicant's union activities (forms included with application); and two mailing labels with the applicant's name and address. Children of members who are attending college or a technical/vocational school must include the following with their applications: an official transcript, including 12th grade classes in progress; a copy of SAT and/or ACT scores, if available; the school's profile, if available; two completed reference forms (forms included with application); and two mailing labels with the applicant's name and address. The application packet must be sent to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date. Application packets postmarked later than the deadline date will not be acknowledged or considered. No exceptions will be permitted even if a third party is responsible for delay.
