Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults

Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a young adult cancer survivor diagnosed between the ages of 15 to 35 OR young adult who has lost a parent/guardian to cancer OR has a parent/guardian with cancer. The parent/guardian must have been diagnosed with cancer when the young adult applicant was between the ages of 15-35 - may include initial or secondary diagnosis, relapse or active treatment.
  3. Must be 35 years or younger at the time of application.
  4. Must attend either a four-year college/university or graduate school in the fall. Students must be enrolled in bachelor's degree program or higher.
  5. Must be a United States resident planning to attend a U.S. educational institution.
  6. Must be actively involved in community service.
  7. Must be a permanent resident of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. OR attend college in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C.

Description: This award is available for young adult survivors of cancer who were 15 years or older during treatment, or 15 years or older during the treatment of their parent or sibling.

Additional Information: Applicants will be evaluated based on financial need, medical hardship, dedication to community service, commitment to educational and professional goals, and demonstration of how the applicant has used his/her cancer experience to impact the lives of other young adults affected by cancer.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the Ulman Cancer Fund (UCF) for Young Adults website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a typed, double-spaced essay of at least 1,000 words addressing the topic listed on the application; a physician verification form or copy of his/her parent's/guardian's death certificate; one reference letter from a teacher/professor, guidance counselor, employer, or community leader (civic or religious); and proof of legal guardianship, if applicable. Completed applications and supporting materials must be submitted together through the online application portal and received by the deadline date.
