Otterbein is a fantastic university with plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. The people are wonderful, and the area is so nice. Plus, Columbus is only 15 minutes away. The food is just alright though. There are plenty of campus activities to get involved with and you will be constantly encouraged by teachers, staff, and students.

The professors make an effort to get to know you personally and you'll get to know them as well if you choose. Having the small class sizes and personalized attention is a wonderful opportunity. Everyone on campus is really looking out for your best interest and want to help you succeed any way they can. The possibilities to get involved are diverse and exciting. If you really want to do something (travel abroad, start a club, change your major, etc.) they'll make it happen for you. Other students aren't always the friendliest, but if you search you will definitely find people with similar interests. It really is a privilege to go here.

I really enjoy spending time on campus at Otterbein University! So many places around the area that you can go to and the academics are great. If people are looking for a small campus with a close community, Otterbein is the place for you! I really like being able to email my professors and meet with them one-on-one if I ever need help.

This college is super small, but the community feel is great! Being right outside of Columbus certainly leaves plenty to do and see. The academic as are a priority, and the campus offers many options for help academically. There are also services to help with transitioning into college.

Otterbein life

I came all the way to Ohio from Houston, TX. I didn't know what to expect when I visited my senior year of high school. I had seen pictures online and heard about the music department and was hooked. Once I got accepted I was asked to participate on an overnight on campus. Since I hadn't been to the campus yet I was eager to go. Right as I drove through campus I could already feel that I had made the right decision. The people were all so welcoming and the campus was gorgeous. There are so many opportunities to get involved around campus. You can get involved with Otterbein student government, senate, clubs, or Greek life. Now being a junior, I can't believe how much Otterbein means to me. The professors are amazing, and they want every student to succeed. I could go on and on, but truly there will always be a piece of this quiet peaceful village in my heart.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

I really love the school. I love the community it brings and the family vibe it holds. It is very peaceful, loving, and just feels like home. Otterbein is very supportive in several things, such as women's right, the LBGTQA community, and religion. It is a place I can call home for the next 3 years

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish someone told me how much my GPA effected my future when it came to organization positions and jobs. Freshman year is a big transition. First semester, you are still trying to figure out how to live and socialize on campus, let alone keep a good GPA. I failed a class and it seriously hurt my grades. second semester I did much better, but it was too late. I couldn't be an RA, a peer mentor for classes, or even a peer mentor for N.E.S.T., the diversity group that helped me find my place at Otterbein. if I had know that have less than a 2.5 would have denied me positions I had worked hard to try and get, I would have tried hard my first semester. Also, there is a study class I feel should be required for all freshman their first semester.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time to talk to myself as a High school senior there would be alot I would say. Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition I would tell myself not to wait. Waiting until you are older only makes it harder on yourself. Being a high school senior would be easy to go straight into college since everyone is there to help make it easier for you.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Her head is throbbing. Her fingernails nails are bitten down to the bone. She slumps next to a pile of homework and a folder packed with scholarship applications. This portrait of my high school-self paints me as a nervous wreck – which is exactly what I was. The idea of going to college terrified me. Therefore, if I could tell myself as a senior one thing, it would be to relax. I spent many sleepless nights worrying about college. I wasn’t sure how to finance my education, for I hadn’t received as much aid as I’d hoped. In addition, I was indecisive about which college to attend and what major to choose. I eventually chose Otterbein University three weeks after the May 1 deadline. Within the first two months of school, I had already decided to major in public relations and was enjoying college life. I learned more about ways to pay for school such as loans and work-study programs and discovered I earned enough AP credit to graduate in three years. I feel now as if I worried all senior year for no reason; everything worked out perfectly.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I would have known to get a smaller meal plan. After first semester I had so many extra swipes and cardinal dollars!

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about my school is that people tend to go home on the weekends. Because people aren't around, the school seems pretty quiet on the weekend. Even though this is an issue, one can always find something to do since Columbus is just a short drive away. Also, if you find yourself the right group of friends, you'll be fine.
