It is a very good school if you want a medium-sized school. People say that if you can't find anything on campus to do, then you're not looking hard enough, which is very true. All the professors are very nice and make an effort to help you succeed.

There is a reason I came back for my Master's Degree. The University of South Dakota (USD) has provided me with unique experiences in on-campus activities such as Pet The Stress Away during Finals, where a student volunteers to bring their dog so that students can pet them and cover the dogs with love, like they so deserve to. USD has given me the opportunity to have supportive staff the entire time, in and outside the classroom by providing me with opportunities, as a student with a diagnosed Learning Disability, full comprehension about my anxiety with exams, as they know the stress it can cause me or any student at any time. If you ask me to sum up my experience at the University of South Dakota, I would say the experience has been unmatched and well worth it.

It is a pretty good school, but it seems like it is very cliche-y and hard to get "in" with people. Frat parties only allow girls to come, and we are known as "The University of Sex and Drugs." There was just a case of someone getting raped last week. It's not a good time.

I like the University of South Dakota but it is in a small town. When classes are in session during fall and spring semesters, the population of the town pretty much doubles. I wish it was a bigger town. If I want something specific, I have to go to Sioux Falls which is an hour away. However, I enjoy my classes, especially the religious ones, and I feel that I am getting a great education.

I was an online student in the Addiction Theory department. I withdrew after 1 month. I did so because it became evident quickly that USD didn't have the best interest of its students in mind. Let me explain. First, their graduate outline dictates that students aren't actually taught. They are supposed to teach themselves from the text books with occasional feedback from professors. Which works if the professors are responsive and give proper feedback. It fails miserably when they do not. One professor used her feedback to vent frustration. In my group of 4, 2 of us dropped and a third was in the process when I left. She drove us all out. And she only reached out to provide scathing criticism of our work. No instruction whatsoever. In the other class, we were using a text book from 2009 (this was this year, 2019) with Data from 2006. In a class about substance use. When data from six months ago is outdated on this topic, using a book a year or two old is understandable. But, in 2019, to have a text book on this topic discussing the physical addiction of marijuana (it isn't) with no mention of the sweeping legalization, nor any discussion of the opioid crisis, that's downright educational malpractice. When I raised these concerns both to the head of the department and to my adviser, BOTH said the issue was mine and if I wasn't prepared for grad school I should withdraw. Which, look, I admit some fault. Clearly I didn't do my homework. Every other grad level class I've taken included copious amounts of interaction from professors so no, I didn't think to ask about that before I applied. That's my fault. By allowing someone unfit to teach to do so and another to use a dangerously out of date text book with no instruction on what is no longer known to be true and what the book is missing, I refuse to allow them off the hook for that. That's losing accreditation worthy.

The school is great. I have enjoyed attending it. There are many opportunities to get involved and so many clubs or groups to join. The class sizes are not so big so that helps. I would highly recommend high school students to look into this university, especially if they like the smaller college feel.

Everyone always says there’s a school out there for you and they weren’t wrong. USD feels like home and gives me a reason to wake up every morning. I feel involved and cares for by other students and professors. There are always activities going on on and off campus. I couldn’t imagine myself at any other school.

USD is a great school. Vermillion is small enough that you get to know the people in your major really well, but events are still organized often enough that there is always something to do. Professors are kind and the ed program is especially great.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Overall, The University of South Dakota has a good campus. The professors are willing to give extra help if you are willing to meet with them, which is very helpful. There are a lot of clubs and groups to be part of as an extracurricular so it is easy to be involved on campus.
