What is your overall opinion of this school?

My university has a reputation for not taking care of its own students - somewhat deservedly, but there are visible efforts being made to change. It's a place that does not hold your hand, and those who aren't proactive will not succeed. However, students learn from incredibly passionate and respected professors, and everyone on campus has a lot of pride.

It's a very active school. In here, you will find many intelligent people with different kinds of passions, ready to teach you a thing or two and also to learn from you. If you're planning to go here, I definitely recommend it. The workload may be hard but it's a worthwhile experience.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The University of California-Berkeley is the best public higher education institution in the United States. This is very noticeable in the academics, extracurriculars, internships, and research opportunities available to students. UC Berkeley lives up to its reputation of providing great academics at an affordable price. There are many opportunities for undergraduate students to get involved on campus through social and academic clubs, research opportunities, internship placement, and greek life/ sports. Students are generally happy to attend UC Berkeley and we have lots of pride for our university.

Facilities wise, it's a public school so you get what you pay for (in-state). There's so many great options for vegetarians and vegans, which I love. Yes, there are a lot of protests and this year a lot of police and militarized-y campus which is...interesting. It's a very STEM-oriented school so I am surrounded by a lot of pre-med, engineering, and math/physics majors, which is cool but also I have yet to run into more than 3 English majors. Overall, great bang for your in-state buck.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

It is an amazing place to learn and study however, dorms are only for one year so be aware of the need to find an apartment that is both cheap and close-by. Classes are large but the GSI's are really good (often better than the professor). Because Berkeley is such a large school, you can find basically anyone and anything.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

An amazing university in terms of academics, student involvement, school spirit, and employment opportunities, but seriously lacking in the quality of residential facilities and campus safety. The campus itself is beautiful and pristine, a hub of intellectual thought and political action that is all at once inspiring as well as overwhelming. There is a great variety of student backgrounds and interests that creates a diverse atmosphere where students may interact with peers from all walks of life. Yet, as a liberal arts major, the presence of STEM at Berkeley does at times feel a bit overpowering, as the engineering and computer science programs are ever popular and somewhat dominating. But despite this, the English program is top rated among American colleges, as are many other sects of the college of letters and sciences. Overall, the academic climate at Berkeley is pleasantly stimulating and inspiring, a true honor to take part in. If only residential campus accommodations were so appealing. The on-campus living options leave much to be desired in way of space and good food, as many rooms in the typical units are glorified closets and the food is often bland and repetitive.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

While Berkeley boasts tons of great restaurants and shops perfect for the average college student, my experience here has been anything but perfect. Grade deflation minimizes any effort you put into your studies. You could be working on a final paper for several weeks and meet with your professor several times to discuss it and get the same grade as another student who wrote it the night before, never read, and didn't meet the page requirement. (This happened to me). Grade deflation causes all grades to fall on a bell curve, so even if you do an A's worth of work, you could receive a B+ because of the bell curve. Students here are sometimes manipulative and condescending, because they for the most part all come from the top 10% of their high schools. And if they're not, then they're most likely adopting a pessimistic attitude all of the time. I'm an out of state student and looking to transfer after my freshman year because my experience here has been that unpleasant. Paying out-of-state tuition at a public university is not worth it; the class sizes are so large, teachers aren't that readily available, and there is not much guidance with course selection. There is an obvious disparity between private school and public schools, as public schools like Berkeley really do not have the resources to pour into its students' happiness, even though they have out-of-state students like me paying huge amounts of money without much financial help. The school doesn't care so much about each individual student as it does maintaining a certain reputation. I love the group of friends I've made here, so my reasons for disliking this school are not hidden in an outcast perspective or the like, but for the most part people have some type of superiority complex and get super competitive. As a female, I don't feel safe walking around Berkeley alone - even in the daytime - because strangers will catcall and follow you. I think my experience at Berkeley has been very eye-opening and I have learned a lot about what I want out of a college experience, and unfortunately Berkeley is not that. There are those that love it and those that can excel in this environment, but if you don't like others constantly trying to do better than you just for their resumes and large class sizes with minimal attention from the school, then look into other options. I emailed my academic advisor two months ago and have yet to receive a response. The pure size of Berkeley makes this school a living nightmare. After moving from a city to living in a small town for my last two years of high school, I thought that this environment would be a nice change. But Berkeley is too big. Even my friends from NY and LA dislike its size. Berkeley may have great global recognition and amazing research, but the school is not great for the desired undergrad experience, especially with class wait lists and the difficulty of trying to graduate in four years.

It is a beautiful campus, but it needs more spaces to study. The environment is super competitive and studious. You will usually doubt your intelligence. The academics is very rigorous. The off campus housing, is very expensive and the apartments itself are not in the best conditions.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

UC Berkeley is an amazing school, characterized by intelligent people who put their studies first, but also like to have a lot of fun. There is a great deal of diversity, in every respect, which I love! The students are friendly, and the professors are definitely approachable and willing to answer questions. Greek life is so fun, and I appreciate that most of the students in Greek life are down-to-earth and do hold themselves and each other to a higher standard of conduct. School spirit abounds, football games are a blast, and win or lose we are always proud to be called Cal Bears!

I love it! I grew up just across the Bay Area in San Francisco and my step dad was definitely one to push me in the direction of UC Berkeley out of high school many years ago! Family life happened and I am now (in my 40s) decided to get my degree! Best decision ever!
