It has a good Baking & Pastry Arts program; the chefs are willing and accessible to help if a student has questions about internship, the industry, etc. However, tuition, room and board are extremely expensive, making JWU difficult to afford. Also, it is a serious party school, probably partly due to the fact that we have three-day weekends.

I think that Johnson & Wales in Providence, RI is for the culinary students only. They aren't that interested in majors that aren't culinary. Most of our resources go to them and the biology department relies on old, used work from the years before. No, help is given in certain areas of work. The tutors are students that are only there to get paid and they don't really know how to teach the material to you. The work in fast paced so no slacking(The one thing I like). Getting in touch with your academic advisor and financial advisor is a pain. Because being here since September and I only got to see my academic advisor once this whole year. I haven't met my financial advisor at all. They both seem to like canceling appointments I make again, and again. And have a problem when I email them about it. Now, when taking in the students here, well the school is predominately white. There is always going to be some sort of racism wherever a young African American woman goes. I had to move dorms due to harsh and unethical harassment by said roommates because of the color of my skin. When they knew a Brittany was dorming with them, an African American with a white girl name is not what they expected. This school in for caucasian, and if your not that then a culinary student is what you should be. They don't accept you nor do they give you the resources to better. Which is why transfering in the best thing for me to a school I have experience being around. And that is what a must do.

It is a really good school to attend because the chefs really push you to be the best you could be. It's a money worth school. It also gives you a lot of opportunities to practice your skills in the clubs that they have. Like the skills classes for pasta making, pizza making, or you could do some pastry things like pulled sugar. So overall this school is where you should attend if you want to be in the culinary or pastry world.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

I absolutely love attending Johnson & Wales. I have completed a lot of research, talk to many people and genuinely love what I am doing. My professors and chefs are great, patient and share in my passion for learning. The best part of attending this university is the labs. I have learned so much with the cooking process.

JWU is the most diverse campus I've ever seen in many respects, which can be good or bad depending on the category. In terms of racial diversity, we're not one of the WASP-y New England schools and minorities have more than adequate representation. Academically, there are students with all different GPAs and interests. Most kids are culinary or hospitality majors, but don't let that dissuade you because each major really does have awesome faculty that will help you learn a LOT. Our professors are very academically achieved and have tons of experience in their field. The financial aid office is relatively generous if you make a good and professional impression. However, for a culinary school, the food's a little...inedible. If you're vegan or vegetarian you'll want to get off the meal plan before you even get there because we are meat-centric as all get out. Good luck finding a grocery store if you don't have a car or Whole Foods money. We're not in the best part of Providence like Brown is but it's easy enough to walk to the RISD museum, Federal Hill, or Thayer if you want to escape what is the most boring part of Providence. All in all, this school has lots to offer if you're willing to put up with a few things.

I love this school. It is so diverse and inclusive. It feels more like home to me. The campus is so beautiful and there is always something to do on and off campus. The academics are not too stressful, very intermediate and it never feels overwhelming.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

JWU is a great school where you can meet many peoples of many cultures, you also have the opportunity to do almost anything and have the freedom to be anyone. The fact that this campus is bisected into a City campus and also a Suburban campus can truly provide for almost any type of student personality.
