Johnson & Wales University-Providence Top Questions

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Nicole

There's no real campus, city building, no greek housing, etc.

Jho

The most frustrating thing about my school, is that there isn't enough time. Especially for new students who are interested in the food industry, but actually never held a proper chef's knife like myself. I was thrown in a class where I had struggled the first segment (out of 5) because I was unfamilar with the terms and the proper cuts. I stayed for extra help and took extra classes to try to work on my cuts, but they were still not perfect. It was a little discouraging, but I had to continue to practice to be better.

Amadi

The distractions. There are so many beautiful women and places to go.

James

Sometimes there are moments where the authority figures will be a lenient and other times they will over enforce the rules. Another thing is that in some of the dorm rooms there are four students. That would not be a problem if there was enough space for everybody. At times you will find yourself clashing with your roommates over the space.

Bridget

The campus is spread out in a city

Breanna

The area is a little rough

Dominique

sometimes not being told about important events occuring with scheduling.

Yazmyn

There is, honestly, not one thing that I find frustrating about my school. They strive to make all of their students happy and content and do so by accomodating them as much as possible. All of the professors and chefs that I have worked with so far have been amazing, to say the least. All of the classes I have taken have not had more than 20-30 students at a time, whichs makes the learning experience so much easier and the relationship with my professors and chefs so much closer.

Lianne

All major projects are due in the same week of the term and all tests are usually within a few days of one another.

Lillian

The most frustrating thing about JWU is the food served in the dining facilities on campus (ironic, no?). At the beginning and the end of the school year, the food is great, but it the middle of the year, it's sub-par.

Emily

The most fustrating thing about Johnson & Wales University is the tempting enviroment that the students are around. Two blocks down the street are clubs, bars, and numerous student related activities that many not be the best to be around during the school days. Even though the eviroment was a hard to get used to in the begining, it has taught me alot about time managment and what my priorities really are at college.

latiesha

The most frustrating thing about my school is the programs. its not frustrating not in a bad way but the fact that the professors expect so much from you . It gets frustrating trying to try and do work thats up to par with past students that wil impress the professors.

Sarah

At Johnson and Wales, choosing classes can be a very stressful experience. Time slots are assigned to each group of students. The freshman level students are the last students allowed to register. The most frustrating part of registering for classes is that all students register at the exact same time. Registration opens at six in the morning, usually on a Tuesday, and all registration is done online. Since all freshman register at the same time, the website crashing is inevitable. Since classes fill up very quickly, there are many scheduling issues that simply cannot all be resolved.

Amanda

i think that the most frustrating thing about my school is that he homework you are given in each class always ends up being due at the same time. It always seems like there are never enough hours in the day to finish. thank god our library is open until midnight durin the week, or else some of my work would not get finished.

Amanda

Johnson and Wales does not follow through giving money to students and filing students paperwork. My room is the show room for tours at our school. For each tour we are supposed to get gift cards to the store and we have not gotten them. We were told they were given to a different hall. Also Johnson and Wales is horrible at filing paperwork. I sent in my transcript for my transfer credits and the school told me that I did not send it in. I looked through my files and I had a copy of the transcript right there.

Kymber-Lyn

The most frustrating thing about my school when you first arrive is that a lot of the student body seems to only want to party. This will change though in your second year, because many of these students will fail out in their first year. Another thing that frustrates me is that many of the students don't take the time to find out all the school has to offer. Johnson & Wales can take you anywhere that you want to go but you have to put in some effort as well, this is college after all.

Jonathan

The most frustrating thing about JWU is sometimes trying to sign up for classes that are full and you have to re-arrange your whole schedule to fit necessary classes. Also there are courses that are only offered during one trimester and again you have to work your schedule around this. Another frustrating thing is the inconsistency amongst student service representatives, one person will tell you one thing and the next day another representative will tell you something completely different.

Bailey

That the classes are not very challenging.

Carolyn

For culinary the most frustrating thing is that theyre are onyl two time slots for labs so you either waste your day taking pm labs or wake up early for am labs

Jacquelyn

The most frustrating thing about my school is the cost. Its a little stressful thinking about how much money i will owe when I finish school. This is the first year I recieved financial aid and i did no recieve much. I wish there was more finanical help or the price was lower.

Anne

There is no off-campus housing close enough to school and I have to park for $8/day downtown to go to class.

Danielle

The most frustrating thing about this school is the trimester system. While I enjoy it because it makes time go by much faster, it is not beneficial to students who want to transfer in or out of the school. This is because most other schools do not accept a lot of credits earned here because they are on a semester schedule.

Ashley

The email system sometimes gets too full and doesn't empty itself and it makes you lose important emails.

Jillian

There is not a lot of on campus parking, and it can be very hard to find parking downtown.

Hollie

last minute projects and essays

Shannon

The faculty in the dorms are very unhelpful and rude. There are so many kids who do drugs and drink in and around the campus and are not punished because they are friends with the RA's.

John

Getting to class with traffic.

Katie

Financial aid is hard to contact sometimes.

Rebecca

It is frustrating that if a student tranfers, the credits earned at JWU will not follow them to the next school.

Ryan

Sometimes the online system gets messed up and you may not be able to get onto UCONNECT to view holds or grades. It is always fixed though.

Laura

Being on trimesters because we have different vacation times then any other college or university.

Omar

academic and financial services: they don't tell you what you have to do.. they don't guide you.... you gotta do a lot more work to search for what you need the departments within the school don't communicate which makes it a lot more difficult for the students to do what they need to do.
